Maintenance Courses 2017
Are you interested in learning how to look after your bike? From basic puncture fixing to the secrets of bearing adjustment, we have a course for you. Our Basics and Beginners’ workshop is a standalone two-hour session for anyone who wants the confidence to carry out essential fixes on their bike. Or you can book on our Intermediate Course which runs as a block of three two-hour sessions , covering everything you need to know to keep your cycle in top condition.
Basics and Beginners workshop
- Punctures – getting the wheel out and the tyre off
- Punctures – replacing the inner tube
- Tyres – sizing and pressure
- Brakes – checking brake pads
- Brakes – tightening the brake cable
Two hours £24 – includes free pump and tyre levers to take away.

Intermediate Maintenance Course
Our Intermediate course is designed as a programme of three sessions:
- Fitting brake pads
- Checking brake mechanisms
- Disc brakes (mechanical)
- Recabling brakes and checking cable wear
- Gears – setting up gears for optimum performance
- Measuring chain wear
- Removing and replacing cassette
- Fitting a new chain
- Wheel bearings – using cone spanners to take apart and reassemble
- Headset and bottom bracket bearings – theory and adjustment
- Wheel truing using truing stands

Basics and Beginners’ class
Sat 1 July (2-4pm) £24
We still have a couple of places free on this class
After that we’ll be having a break over the summer months – more classes in the autumn!
All courses need a minimum of four people to run. If we have to cancel due to low attendance we will make a full refund of the course fee.
If you have to cancel we will refund your fee as follows
- Up to eight days ahead: full refund
- Between seven and three days’ notice: half refund
- Two days or less: no refund
FAQs for Courses
Do I need to bring my own bike?
For the Basics and Beginners course we will use Bicycle Links’ bikes, though we are happy to look at your own bike at the end of the session. For the Intermediate course please bring your own bike if possible.
Do you have parking?
We have two car parking spaces available in our yard and it’s first come, first served. Otherwise you will need to find on street car parking or use Rose Lane multi-storey.
What is the minimum age?
For individual attendees the minimum age is 16. We may be able to accommodate one child aged 8 to 15 years working with their parent or guardian at an extra £12 per session – please contact us to inquire.
Do I need to bring tools?
No, we provide all tools. We provide free cables on Intermediate One, but if you want to install other parts, eg. new brake pads or chain and cassette, you can buy them in our shop with a 15% discount if you buy while you are on a course.
Do you cover maintenance of hydraulic brakes, or servicing hub gears, or wheel building?
Not on these courses, but if there is enough demand we may run more specialist sessions.
Can you sort out a specific problem I have with my bike?
If it is not covered during the sessions, and there is enough time at the end, the tutor will be happy to answer your questions.
